About the Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardener program and training are conducted by the West Virginia University Extension Service through the county extension offices. The comprehensive training provides gardeners with the opportunity to improve their horticultural knowledge and skills and then share their experience with the public through organized volunteer activities.

Program topics covered include: botany, plant problem diagnosis, soils, ornamentals, pest management, fruits, vegetables, and plant propagation. Extension staff, Master Gardeners, and local area experts serve as class instructors. Typically, the current year’s program application is available in the spring and the training course begins in late summer.

WVU Extension Ag and Natural Resources Agent, Dr. Mary Beth Bennett, serves as the Master Gardener program advisor for the Berkeley-Jefferson Extension Master Gardeners. You can contact Dr. Bennett by phone at 304-264-1936 or email.
